SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – 14 new cases of measles have been reported in the state since Thanksgiving.
The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) said eight of the new cases resulted from the previously reported exposure at the Way of Truth Church in Inman, and three of the new cases were exposed in a school setting. The other three are still under investigation.
According to the DPH, there are now 76 cases related to the Upstate outbreak and 79 total cases reported in the state this year.
Here’s an age breakdown of the Upstate outbreak:
- 14 cases under the age of 5
- 49 cases between the ages of 5 and 17
- 8 cases in 18 and older
- 5 cases in minors under the age of 18 but age undisclosed
Vaccination status breakdown:
- 69 unvaccinated
- 3 partially vaccinated with one of the recommended two-dose MMR sequence
- 1 vaccinated
- 2 unknown
- 1 still being investigated
Officials mentioned that there are currently 134 people in quarantine and one in isolation.
Based on the new cases, the DPH said it has identified public exposures at four schools:
- 40 students in quarantine from Hendrix Elementary
- 13 students in quarantine from Mabry Middle School
- 5 students in quarantine from Chapman High School
- 17 students in quarantine from Tyger River Elementary School
Students from those schools who quarantine successfully without becoming ill are scheduled to be able to return to classes between Dec. 11 and Dec. 15, depending on the school.
